The Unsung Hero December 10, 2009

This bike enjoys a lot of attention on one of the busiest streets in Helsinki.

This war Hero has been wounded pretty badly. He (for some reason I tend to place bikes in the masculine category. Or is it the war reference…) will most likely retire soon.

This location has a lot of bikes that look like they have not been used in a while. It is interesting to see how long bikes like this will stay in their present context. There are a lot of stores and shops in the area and abandoned bikes aren’t exactly the best way to attract customers.

  • Find context: not locked onto any structure

Corroded tech near Kamppi.

This Corratec bike didn’t have too much parts left anymore. It seems that it has been here for awhile, because it is quite corroded. It is also possible that it hasn’t been maintained too well before it was left here. It is interesting how the pedals are often intact. This may be due to their difficult removal.

This bike is locked onto a bike rail with a chain

I found a couple of bikes lying around in the Kamppi area in Helsinki. This one has lost its front wheel and seat; the first ones to disappear.

Raleigh D'711 with no seat or front wheel

This Raleigh dirt bike has been here for quite a while. It has lost its seat and seatpost and front wheel. Someone has tried to remove the rear wheel but must have noticed it was locked onto the tree rim.

The leopard of the urban jungle taking a nap

This is a good example why it is good not to have quick release skewers. Here the bike has only lost its seat. Though it is in a relatively unrideable state, it is not totally a wreck or stolen. Hopefully the Leopard will roar once more some day.

  • Preservation status: unrideable, seat missing
  • Find context: underpass below the Puistola railway station, locked on a bicycle rack from the front wheel

The mighty Helkama Sport 5000

The front wheel and seat of this popular Finnish bike has been taken in the busy location of the Helsinki city centre. It is funny that the bike is still there, though it is not attached to the bar. Where are all these wheels and seats sold?
