A lock left on a rack

This lock was most likely once attached to a bike’s seat stay with cable ties. How the rear wheel was removed, remains a mystery.

  • Preservation status: lock only
  • Find context: an underpass at the Puistola railway station (Helsinki suburban area)
  • Documented on: December 3rd 2009
  • Make and model: unidentified, most likely of the type that is connected to a bike’s seat stay with cable ties.

A front wheel locked onto a wall mounted bike stand

This front wheel has been locked onto a solid bike stand. A bike will most likely get stolen when locking it by its front wheel. It is uncertain whether this wheel had quick-release skewers or not. Anyone who is motivated to steal a bike most likely carries a wrench or two with him/her so even wheels with nut releases are not protected against criminals.

The leopard of the urban jungle taking a nap

This is a good example why it is good not to have quick release skewers. Here the bike has only lost its seat. Though it is in a relatively unrideable state, it is not totally a wreck or stolen. Hopefully the Leopard will roar once more some day.

  • Preservation status: unrideable, seat missing
  • Find context: underpass below the Puistola railway station, locked on a bicycle rack from the front wheel
  • Documented on: December 3rd 2009

My first survey find was a lonely star found in an underpass below the railway station of the suburb of Puistola in Helsinki. The shoot turned out picturesque though the place truly is not a such.
