Sartano City Cruiser January 3, 2010

Sartano City Cruiser missing its seat.

The bike was not locked.

I found this bike in the backyard of the house where I was helping to move my friend. This bike was missing its seat and thus unrideable. It was not locked and covered with snow.

  • Find context: in Helsinki, Herttoniemenranta, in a bicycle rack, unlocked
  • Documented on: December 3rd 2009

Bike reused as a gate.

This bike has been here for quite a long time. I think it is a cool idea to reuse bikes like this and I suppose that the gate is also quite functional.

  • Preservation status: unrideable
  • Find context: found welded into a gate in Pispalanharju, Tampere

Snow and -10 C, sun and Tunturi Vip.

These fellows don’t really get a v.i.p. treatment. This has been in the same place for quite a long time, at least 4 weeks. I’m really not sure if the owner really wants it anymore. It is just the front wheel which is bended.

  • Preservation status: unrideable, frontwheel bended

Disgraced Puch

Puch was found upside down with the text "Puch" partly sanded down

This Puch bike was still in a quite good condition. Only one pedal is missing and the chains are detached. The bike has maybe been stolen before it has ended up here, because the Puch text has been tried to sand down. The bike has not been locked and it is turned upside down. This act reminded me of the stuff happening in the graveyards, where some people have been tipping over the grave stones. Though here the media is not at all as sacral, the consept of disrespecting and disgracing these objects is the same. The consept of things being turned upside down is often considered as the meaning of the things would be the opposite. This same phenomenon can be seen in the upside down usage of the christian cross by satan worhippers or the usage of pentagram as a symbol of evil. These acts of mischief are conceptually different than the act of stealing bikes.

  • Preservation status: unrideable, chain detached, one pedal missing
  • Find context: placed upside down near a bicycle rack close by to the Tapanila railway station
  • Documented on: December 7th 2009
  • Make and model: Puch, model?

The leopard of the urban jungle taking a nap

This is a good example why it is good not to have quick release skewers. Here the bike has only lost its seat. Though it is in a relatively unrideable state, it is not totally a wreck or stolen. Hopefully the Leopard will roar once more some day.

  • Preservation status: unrideable, seat missing
  • Find context: underpass below the Puistola railway station, locked on a bicycle rack from the front wheel
